New approaches to treating prostate cancer are in development by Hifu Prostate Cancer Institute Miami. Some of them are currently available in the U.S. or other countries, and may not be covered by Medicare or private insurance. Others are not yet available or are in clinical trials. The following is not a complete list, but these are treatments you may hear about.
Instead of using microwave energy, extreme heat or extreme cold, the NanoKnife System uses electrical currents to treat tumors by ablating them. It is not widely available, and has not received FDA clearance for treatment of prostate cancer. There is no long term data on success or side effects and is not covered by Medicare or insurance.
Focal Laser Ablation (FLA)
FLA involves placing a laser fiber into the core of a prostate tumor, and activating laser light that produced extreme heat to ablate a tumor. It has broad FDA clearance to ablate tumors in soft tissue. There is no long term data on success or side effects, and is not covered by Medicare or insurance.
Prostate Cancer Vaccine
So far, no one has developed a successful way to prevent prostate cancer by “inoculating” against it. However, much research continues into this area.
As with a prostate cancer vaccine, considerable research is being done but to date there have been no significant breakthroughs.
Just as HIFU uses sound waves to heat tissue, Hyperthermia uses radio waves to selectively heat the prostate gland to a lethally high temperature. It is used in Europe, especially Germany, to treat prostate cancer. It is not available in the U.S.
